2025 Briefing & New Year 2026 Greetings
Our Mission and Activities
The Hope Restoration and Health Initiative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with severe mental health conditions and their caregivers in the transition from crisis to recovery. We provide assistance to individuals discharged from hospitals who lack suitable accommodation, and we sponsor medical treatment for homeless persons living with mental illness. Through our residential centre, Hope Resource, we facilitate recovery journeys and enable reintegration into the community. Since commencing operations in September 2020, our mission has been to foster recovery, prevent homelessness, and restore hope in mental health care.
Programme Impact
To date, Hope Restoration & Health Initiative has supported about 50 individuals with serious mental health conditions, including those that have resided at Hope Resource, with an average stay of 22 months (ranging from 1 to 62 months).
Our recovery objectives include:
(1) Cultivating a sense of community through strong relationships, peer support, and belonging;
(2) Inspiring hope for the future, encouraging aspirations, and motivating positive change;
(3) Rebuilding self-esteem by moving beyond the stigma of illness and recognizing personal strengths;
(4) Discovering purpose and meaning through reflection on illness experiences; and
(5) Promoting personal responsibility, autonomy, and self-determination.
Thus far, 27 residents have successfully transitioned back into the community, living independently or with family members, supported by our ongoing outreach services. While a few experienced setbacks requiring hospital readmission or brief return to Hope Resource, the majority have sustained progress.
At the beginning of 2025, Hope Resource housed 17 residents. During the year, three transitioned back into the community, and one new resident was taken in. Sadly, one elderly homeless patient, who had resided with us for 33 months following a charity-sponsored hospital admission, passed away after developing an acute febrile illness. He was later diagnosed with a chronic renal disease, and died at the FMC on 1 March 2025.
Five of the seven previous Hope-Care intervention patients, that we were unable to reunite with family members following hospital care, remained at Hope Resource, and making progress in their recovery.
In 2025, we sponsored the hospital admission of only one homeless patient, who was successfully reunited with his family in Ilorin after two months of treatment.
Our care team also worked with community members to provide successful interventions on two female homeless patients, who did not require hospitalization.
Our DOWN website was REVIVED during the year!
We are deeply grateful to all our individual partners, and Ember Mental Health for the support in nurturing our mission to foster recovery, prevent homelessness, and restore hope in mental health care.
2025 INCOME AND EXPENDITURES:
• Our sources of income in 2025
- Voluntary support by patients’ family members (49.3%);
- Donations from individual partners and organisations (50.7%); including family members of our past residents.
• Analysis of expenditures:
- 49.9% on food and provisions for residents
- 17.3% on hospital care and medications,
- 16.8% on facility maintenance.
- Only 15.9% of our expenses goes to staff remuneration because most of our manpower base are volunteers.
Our financing structure underscores our commitment to alleviating the burden of care on families of individuals with severe mental illness, particularly in the absence of state support for caregivers.
PLANS AND FUTURE GOALS:
Looking ahead, we intend to:
- Expand our outreach by picking up more homeless individuals for hospital care and community reintegration, subject to funding availability.
- Establish enterprise projects to empower residents with vocational and livelihood opportunities, while enhancing organizational sustainability.
- Replicate our programme in additional cities and states across the country.
Happy New Year 2026!
