The HoPe-CaRe Intervention Programme Update: 6th December 2024 (6/12/24)
The in-patient care phase of the first batch of our HoPe-CaRe Intervention programme was concluded following the discharge of the 7th patient from the hospital ward of FNPH Abeokuta this morning, 6th December 2024.
Programme Overview & Outcomes:
The HoPe-CaRe Intervention programme of Hope Restoration & Health Initiative (HRHI), started in the middle of last year with a plan to pick up 7 homeless mentally ill patients from the streets of Abeokuta, Ogun State, for treatment at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro Abeokuta with payments of all hospital fees by our organization. The last patient in the batch was picked up April this year. The rate of pick up was determined by availability of admission bed space in the hospital according to our written agreement with the hospital management before the programme.
Following discharge from the ward, patients were either released to traced and available family members or taken into our purpose-built warden-supervised residential facility, Hope Resource, located at Klm 10 Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway, to commence their rehabilitation and community reintegration. Only two of the 7 patients were successfully reunited with and accepted by the family members. The remaining five (5), were taken into our supported accommodation, because the traced family members were unwilling or unable to provide needed support for the patients ongoing recovery. This level of support requires, among other things, regular follow-up clinic attendance at the hospital and use of their prescribed medication.
